Folic acid is a B vitamin complex that is essential for the formation of red blood cells (RBCs). Pregnant women are advised to consume it for normal neuronal development and prevent neurological disorders (NTDs) in pregnancy.

It is also necessary for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and even sex. Long-term use in terms of a multivitamin that includes folic acid (such as the use of dietary fiber and aspirin) may be associated with a decreased risk of colon cancer.

Regarded as brain food needed for the production of neurons. It also acts as a coenzyme in the synthesis of DNA, which is important for healthy cell division and replication. Anemia often occurs because of a lack of folic acid. Folic acid also may help reduce depression and anxiety disorders and are used in the treatment of cervical dysplasia, alcoholism, and liver problems.

Sources of folic acid: beans, meat, brown rice, wheat and grains, dates, green leafy vegetables, crucifers, liver, milk, citrus, fish (salmon, tuna).
